WiTT invites you to join us for an evening with Mivy James, Digital Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Mivy has held this role for two years, bringing nearly 30 years of experience in IT. She focuses on driving digital transformation, enterprise architecture, and technology strategy, particularly in high-trust areas of government.
The government published its Strategic Defence Review in June last year and is embarking on what then-defence secretary John Healey called the “deepest defence reforms for 50 years”, focused in part on innovation and novel technology.
Our conversation with Mivy will cover her career journey; the MoD’s Digital Backbone which, as Mivy has written, “powers everything: from soldiers and vehicles to aircraft, ships, satellites, and drones”; dealing with technology obsolescence, introducing new technologies, including AI; and other topics.

Digital Chief Technology Officer, Ministry of Defence
Mivy James has been the Digital Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for 2 years, bringing nearly 30 years of experience in IT. She focuses on driving digital transformation, enterprise architecture, and technology strategy, particularly in high-trust areas of government.
Mivy began her career as an analyst/programmer after completing a degree in Computer Science and Maths. She quickly advanced into technical leadership and system design, collaborating with a range of UK government clients on everything from cutting-edge technology research to the strategic design of multi-billion-pound programmes.
Passionate about technology and diversity, Mivy is a strong advocate for women in IT. She is also the founder and chair of Digital Intelligence’s gender balance network.
