A Night at the Movies: Tech Talks

WiTT’s September meeting featured a screening of selected presentations from TED, TED Global, TEDx and other events that look at how women use, influence, and create technology and technology-based solutions.

We screened the following talks:

Catherine Mohr
How I became part sea urchin

Jamie Paik
Origami robots that reshape and transform themselves

Marjan van Aubel
The beautiful future of solar power

Mariana Mazzucato
Government — investor, risk-taker, innovator

Carole Cadwalladr
Facebook’s role in Brexit — and the threat to democracy

Kate Darling
Why we have an emotional connection to robots

We also recommend a fun talk from this year’s TED:  Danielle N. Lee: How hip-hop helps us understand science

As we discussed at our event, Carole Cadwalladr’s work is threatened by a lawsuit. In her words: ‘A businessman who funded Nigel Farage’s Leave.EU campaign – Arron Banks – and who is under investigation by the National Crime Agency, the British equivalent of the FBI, has filed formal proceedings against me. The result is that I will be tied up in litigation for months in a move that press freedom organisations have called an “abuse of law” to “silence a journalist” .’ If you would like to support Carole and her work, you can find her GoFundMe page here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/democracy-the-fight-back
